# Sustainable Corrosion and Scale Inhibition for Biopharmaceutical Cooling Towers

Large-scale cooling systems are critical to biopharmaceutical manufacturing, but increasing efficiency while meeting strict environmental regulations can be a complex challenge. Eliminating harmful discharges and reducing water consumption are key to achieving corporate sustainability goals without compromising equipment protection.

Discover how Veolia supported a leading biopharmaceutical manufacturer in Ireland with E.C.O.Film\*, a patented non-phosphorus scale and corrosion inhibitor designed to optimise cooling tower operations and eliminate phosphate discharges.

## Key Operational & Environmental Challenges

The manufacturer required an advanced water treatment solution to optimise their cooling tower operations while adhering to strict environmental constraints.

**Key requirements included:**

- **Water Conservation:** Increase cooling tower cycles of concentration to significantly reduce water makeup and blowdown.
- **Environmental Compliance:** Eliminate phosphate discharges and reduce adsorbable organic halides (AOX) in cooling tower blowdown.
- **Biological Growth Control:** Prevent nutrient-driven microbiological and algae growth without relying heavily on biocides.
- **Asset Protection:** Maintain excellent corrosion and scale protection, specifically targeting copper corrosion rates.
- **Chemical Reduction:** Lower sulphuric acid consumption and overall chemical demand through alkaline operation.

## Veolia Solutions

Veolia designed and delivered two independent reverse osmosis water systems utilising Osiris and Thermapure technology. Featuring duplex configurations for built-in redundancy, the systems include a 60°C hot-run setup for the CSSD department and a dedicated cold-run system for the Endoscopy Unit, ensuring robust, compliant, and resilient water infrastructure.
